I just got this vacuum today as a b-day gift..I've been talking about it for months.
My initial reaction is, loving it! The engineering is top notch! And the quality is impressive! The canister's hose and telescoping wand are highly durable and resilient. The upright's cord comes out at the top in back of the handle instead of at the back of the motor head near the floor, where you would have to just clip it up at the handle anyway to keep it out of the way. I also love that the upright will lay down horizontally to get under furniture and be easily held for stairs.
The only thing I would suggest to improve it is this..since the bristles on the hand brush attachment are removable, it would be nice to have a second option (ie. have the standard bristles and provide another set of soft bristles as well).
All in all, this seems to be the best vacuum I have ever owned (and my vacuum is always very near and dear to me..friends have been known to refer to me as "Mister Munk").
I didn't want to spend a fortune on a vacuum but I also didn't want to throw away money on a piece of crap. I checked Consumer Reports and it pointed me to this model. Works as advertised although I would agree with other reviewers who mention it's probably not the best product for a bare floor. Then again, the agitators on every vacuum cleaner I've ever used shoot stuff away from the machine on bare floors before the vacuum picks up.
I was pleasantly surprised at how light the machine was. With the machine set on the lowest setting it almost seemed to move itself across the floor (although this means that you're working against it on the pull back!).
I'm still trying to find the best technique for step cleaning with this one. The 20-year-old vacuum cleaner this replaced had a nice edging feature. I'm probably going to have to break out more of the attachments to effectively clean the steps.
While I'm sure this would probably be true of any cleaner with attachments, I've been using the dusting attachment to clean duct grills and it's great! My old machine didn't have attachments so I use to do all this by hand. This one feature alone has saved me all kinds of time!
If I had it to do over I'd definitely buy this one again.
Eureka 4700D
The 1st review is WRONG!
The previous 1st review of this vacuum is absolutely wrong and is probably referring to a different model. 1st of all, this model DOES NOT have a Hepa filter. So there is no way the door holding the filter on could be coming loose, since it doesn't exist. 2nd of all, this vacuum is surprisingly very light. And is probably the lightest vaccuum of it's size. Lastly, as of this date, this model is brand new, and has only been on the market for a few weeks, so there is no way anyone could have had it for a few months. Also, to get service on a Eureka vacuum under the warranty, you only need to take it to a authorized repair shop. There are many of these in most major cities.
I have only had this vacuum a few weeks, but it works well. It seems to be constructed well, and will hopefully last longer then my previous Eureka, which only went for 1 year, but this one seems to be constructed better. I especially like the auto height adjustment feature, and the fact that this vaccum is light and easy to maneuver. In my opinion it is a good buy for the price.

This vacuum is great. yes, the rewind feature is awesome but also the sheer sucking power of this vac will have you wonder why you ever sat on your carpet without cleaning it with this sucker fist.

Update: 2009 and I still have mine going strong despite a nicked cord (my fault) and babysitting the hairiest dog on the planet. The giant hair balls clogged the intake hose, but I just had to detach it and take the garden hose and blast out the clogs. New rule to live by: Do not let a dog into your house who's coat is in the "blow" stage.

I researched tons of vacuum before purchasing this one. I wanted the best I could get for around $ 100 This is the first time I've owned a bagless vacuum and I was a bit concerned that it would be messy to empty it. Turns out not to be a problem. Everything detach easily. If you were to open it over the garbage and shake it out, then some of the dust will fly around cause of the shaking. I just set it in a plastic bag, open, and lift it up and everything comes out in the mess free bag. The automatic cord rewind thing was not a selling point for me when I purchased it, but now I do not ever want to own a vacuum without it - it's so convenient. I gave it four stars only because it is a little bit heavy, but not too much to be a problem for me.
Superb Performance5
Having two different Eureka Optima's break within a six month period, I Figured it was a sign to maybe try a different make and model. Then I saw this and Hoover Figured I'd give it a try. I'll admit I was a little unsure at first because it was a little too big, especially for my apartment. But wow, was I surprised by it's performance and features. Setup was a breeze, took five minutes and a phillips screwdriver. The retractable cord is an awesome feature, but by far my favorite feature has to be how you release the dust cup. It's just common sense, but took forever for someone to realize "Hmmm, let's make it easy and prevent dirt going everywhere by having the cup release from the BOTTOM!" And you can do it one handed, with the flick of your thumb. Storage is the same as my old Optima, it's just a little taller, but I can tell this badboy is going to be around for a long long time. Five stars all the ways!

Customer Review: The Little Vac could! - Powerful and Lightweight
Purchase Requirements - Small - Easy - Powerful - Quiet - Long Pants
1). Small - when I first received my shipment, I was a little surprised. The box was 4'x2'x 1-1/2 ". Gosh was huge and a bit difficult (for VAC). Gradually, I have the package to find another field. A little easier, the size seemed a little more appropriate. I opened the box quickly to find another field. Now we are in conversation - if this box was opened, I saw what I wanted - a small, good looking, easy-VAC! The Stainless Steel has a professional VAC look.
2). Lightweight - definitely meets the bill. No larger in width and length as my keyboard, it is no problem about this VAC.
3) Performance - I do not have much of any claims (4 hp and 95 "of waterlift), but this small VAC took me a believer in power. This is the first time that I only for the use of splitting tool unfavorable for corners. These small pieces of fluff and hair, which is usually required, again with the fingers came up. The padding seems to be that with dust - clean!
4) Peaceful - my subjective opinion says that this machine is quiet for such a powerful vac. In fact, my IQAir Air Cleaner is louder. Turn the 2-speed switch with low (works much like my old shop VAC and speed), now it is quiet!
5.) Long Pants - The 6.5 foot hose, light and flexible to the class. It is sufficient for my purposes, but I can buy a hose extension.
CONS:
1). The dust bag is relatively small (approximately 7 "diameter by 5" deep) - that is to be expected in a tiny package.
2). Tools look and feel cheap, which is quite typical for all brands. However, they are effective.

According to Bosch, this is a problem, they are not covered by the warranty. The estimates for the repair of several shops were well over $ 100.00.

I do heavy research on everything I buy. Here are my thoughts on buying this canister vacuum:
Impressions
The Bosch Formula BSG71370UC is amazing: high performance, solid construction, convenient design. Small/light enough to be portable, but large enough to have built in attachment storage and a high capacity bag system. Suction power is adjustable, providing two things. First, full power is to powerful for some surfaces (there are warnings in the manual). Second, running at normal/low power, the unit is quieter than a microwave oven and you think its not pulling well until you put your hand over the hose - yeow! First impression of the first use on carpet that got regularly vacuumed: "wow, its looks like its been washed!"
Attachments
This is the top of the formula line, including the turbo upholstery attachment. This draws energy from the airflow on the suction and transfers it to a scrubbing brush, with the sound of a turbo charger. This and all the attachments work like gang busters. The main carpet wand has a switch for turning the large scrubber's electric motor on/off (carpet/floors), and the suction with the crevice tool is so strong, nothing gets away. Even with the integrated motor, the head of this unit is low profile enough to fit in and around most furniture. The cord auto retracts, just give it a tug and let go. You can pull the canister itself behind you, the 3-360 wheels turn on a dime, but getting around objects still requires pull. With cleaning power combined with multiple filters, this is ideal for people with allergies.
Floors
It handles bare floors mightily, just flip the handle located power switch to off to stop the spinning brush. For complete area cleaning, the small brush attachment hits the baseboards and low walls. The units wheels, of course, handle even better.
Hair
My main use for this and the reason I bought this unit is cat hair, a job it handles well. With 2 sizes of scrubbing nozzles, no unattached hair can hide for long.
Parts
In the configuration for full carpet/floors, it comes apart in 3 sections, hose, tube/handle, and powered nozzle. All 3 require both hands to disconnect, one to squeeze the release mechanism and the other to pull. One of the extra's on this unit is that the power wires for the motorized head are integrated into the tubes/hoses. This makes for quick dis/connects.
Negatives
1) The hose is supposed to spin 360 degrees to avoid tangles but doesn't spin freely enough to work without thought. 2) I like responsive switches. The power switch has a lag time, designed to be used by feet so you have to hold a moment to turn it on and off. 3) Price is high, but abcvacuum.com cuts right through this.
Surprise Use
Dust Buster replacement: Leaving it parked and plugged in, full time behind the sofa my cat frequents. Its so quiet on low, the bits moving down the pipe make more noise than the motor.
Long Term Update
Having it for many months now, here's what else I've learned. The bag full gauge is tough to read, so the easiest way to tell the bag needs changing is that suction goes down - ie when you find yourself using full power. The turbo attachment isn't much more powerful than the standard small nozzle nor as powerful as the electric nozzle. So provided its clean, the floor/carpet electric nozzle cleans upholstery with gusto, leaving the turbo nozzle doing just the hard to reach places. And last but not least, a WONDERFUL way to clean stairs is by connecting the electric power floor/carpet nozzle directly to the wand, leaving the extension tube off.
